A civil rights activist, Comrade Adeniyi, Alimi Sulaiman has mocked the outgoing Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Solomon Dalung over his sudden U-turn on the World Boxing Federation (WBF) cruiserweight champion, involving Bashiru Lawrence Ali, OON, popularly known as Bash Alli at the tail end of his tenure of office.
The source in the known reliably stated that the sudden U-turn of Mr. Dalung on the subject matter, was as a result of fear of the anti-graft agencies, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) which had begun investigation into the alleged criminal diversion of sum of N7.2b approved for the World boxing Championship bout, against his person.
The Minister, since 2017 has been turning down the release of approved fund for the World Boxing Championship and inauguration of the Local Organizing Committee(LOC) for the game, until a few days ago when the human rights group wrote the anti-graft bodies, alleging him(Dalung) of diverting the funds meant for the purpose in the Ministry.
It would be recalled that the Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice (CHRSJ) through its Executive Chairman, Comrade Sulaiman, dragged the Sports Minister before the nations’ anti-graft bodies in a Petition letter dated March 25th, 2019.
The group insisted that Mr. Dalung has diverted the fund which was meant for the promotion of the bout to pitched Alli, against one of the ten opponents that had slated to fight him (Alli) in a World Record Breaking event slated for Nigeria in January 2019.
Meanwhile, the World title fight was billing to come on the platforms of World Boxing Federation (WBF) and International Boxing Union (IBU) in January this year.
Sulaiman, in a signed Press Statement which copies were made available to newsmen on Friday, referring to the content in the recent Minister’s Letter dated6th of May, 2019 with reference number: NSC/GRSD/BABP/CON/77, where he made the U-turn on the matter, to the members of the Committee, stated thus;
“I write to convey my warm sporting felicitations and warm regards from the Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports Development. It is with pleasure, therefore, I write to inform you that the Local Organizing Committee is being reconstituted to continue with the assignment. You are hereby invited to the inauguration and I am looking forward to working with all members of the LOC on the important project”.
Sulaiman who doubles as Human Rights Adviser to Bash Alli Fans Club of Nigeria (BAFCON), therefore condemned Mr. Dalung for his deliberate failure to convene the meeting of the Committee for the Guinness World Record Boxing Championship earlier as stipulated in the approved letter for the game and the game would have put the country on the World Map of Boxing Sport development.
