Mega Rally: The True Position
- NAIJA CENTER apologises for earlier publication
- IGP cancels tomorrow Mega rally
- We don’t need a police permit to hold a rally – APC state secretary
Contrary to NAIJA CENTER earlier report, this medium has been reached by members of the Edo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that the venue of the Mega Rally has not changed.
NAIJA CENTER had reported based on a communique which was shared by someone we trusted.
A former federal lawmaker, Honourable Samson Osagie told NAIJA CENTER that “Mega Rally will hold as scheduled at Garrick. No cause for alarm. Discountenance all fake letters purporting to suggest that the event has been postponed and that the IGP has cancelled it. These are the kicks of a dying horse”
The Publicly Secretary of the party, Mr Chris Azebamwan said “There is no truth in it, the rally will hold tomorrow at the same venue.”
On this note, we apologise to our readers for the misinformation
Mr Azebamwan further told NAIJA CENTER that even his name on the purported letter was spelt wrongly.
“My attention has been invited to a notice ostensibly issued and signed by me, purportedly changing the venue and date of the declaration mega rally that is slated for tomorrow 13th December 2019,” Mr Azebamwan told NCN.
“For the record, the notice is a forgery. My name is spelt Azebanwan instead of Azebamwan.
“Furthermore, I would not refer to our highly valued compatriots who are joining the APC political family as a hoard of supporters.
“This forged document is an indication of the depths to which the perpetrators have sunk in their desperate determination to foist themselves on Edo people.
“The general public and our Party members, in particular, are requested to disregard the fake document, but we urge them instead, to turn up en masse at Garrick Memorial School at 10 am tomorrow 13th Friday 2019.”
Punch reports a breaking news a few minutes ago that the Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu has suspended the rally scheduled to hold tomorrow, Friday, December 2019.
According to the report, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, MR Philip Shuaibu showed a copy of the letter to reporters in Abuja.
Reacting, the State APC Secretary said the IGP position won’t change the position of the party, adding that APC does not need permission to hold the rally.
He told NAIJA CENTER that the party has “not been officially informed” about the new decision not to provide security.
“The rally is going ahead tomorrow, constitutionally, you don’t need a permit from the police to hold a rally. You only request that to provide security, but we don’t need a permit,” He said.
When asked to react on the recent publication by the National newspaper that the GIP has cancelled the rally, Honourable Samson Osagie said”we are not aware of the police report”
Similarly, another ex-federal lawmaker, Honorable Patrick Obahiagbon said “I am not in a position to pontificate on the veracity or mendacity of the alleged pro-tempore suspension of the Mega rally fixed for tomorrow to receive the erstwhile PDP stalwarts desirous of adjusting to the APC.
“I am tempted to believe that it is a political smokescreen and diabolical red herring across the political trail against the backdrop of the fact that a forged letter purporting to emerge from the APC publicity secretary had also permeated the public space about the same time, which he has since debunked, exposed and pulverized as false. So am on the qui vive watching unfolding events but the point must be made that this is a constitutional democracy.”
Meanwhile, anti-Oshiomhole protesters took to the street on Thursday evening over the megal rally.
