The governor contended that the purported law runs contrary to the 1999 constitution which stipulates that a pensioner must be up to 45 years and must have worked for at least 10 years.

He said, “Apart from the inconsistency of such a law to the provisions of the ground norm, which is the constitution of 1999 (as amended), this has led for very long time precedence that does not encourage diligence and prudence in service delivery.”

The governor queried some situations where the same past leaders collect huge salaries and allowances in other positions.

Evidently, the former governor of the state, Rochas Okorocha is currently a senator representing Imo West of the state where he received his salaries and allowances in addition to collecting monthly allowances and salaries from Imo State as a former governor.

It could be recalled that the governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle in 2019 scrapped pension for ex-governors and their deputies, speakers and their deputies.

In 2016, reactions trailed the life pension for ex-governors and legislators.

Uzodinma thanked the State House of Assembly for its support and rising to the occasion and embracing the desire to straighten the internally generated revenue.

Speaking on the issue, the speaker of the house Chiji Collins said the house presented the bill on the repeal of pension and gratuity and the bill on the Imo State University of Agriculture and Environmental Science.

He said other states had repealed bills on pensions and gratuity after they realized it was contrary to the 1999 constitution.
