Emwanta: Why I said Edo PDP is Expired in Edo
Barr. Andrew Emwanta, an aide to the governor Godwin Obaseki has insisted that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expired in Edo state.
He was responding to the state publicity secretary, Mr Chris Nehikhare who had called him an undertaker over a comment he made on ChannelsTV.
NAIJA CENTER had reported Emwanta who compared the opposition in Edo State to a drug with NAFDAC number.
Emwanta had also claimed the main opposition in the state is a group, The Edo Peoples Movement that is at loggerhead with Obaseki over his leadership style.
He said “As I said earlier, PDP is, actually a drug with NAFDAC number but its expiring date is showing that it is an expired party. As far as we know, we have just one party and that is the party to beat in the next election, the All Progressives Congress, the APC.”
Reacting to NAIJA CENTER’s query, Mr Nehikhare had said “I didn’t know that Andrew Emwanta was an undertaker. I didn’t know he was also a mortuary attendant. Edo PDP an opposition has been so effective that members of the same party APC now use narratives dictated by PDP to fight themselves.”
In what seems to be a back and forth exchange, Emwanta said Nehikhare attacked him instead of addressing the issues around the message in his comment.
He added “It is not news in Edo politics that the main opposition to the All Progressives Congress (APC) Government of Edo State, is a group known as the Edo Peoples Movement (EPM). This group is made up of renegade APC members and some new PDP decampees loyal to Adams Oshiomhole.
“The out-gone Chairman of the Edo State chapter of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, within his last year in the office played a role similar to that of a local champion in the diaspora.
“He practically abandoned his duty post in Edo State for greener pastures in Rivers State, where he has a booming Government road construction job amongst others. Chris Nehikhare practically became the de facto Edo State Chairman of the party. It was this leadership deficit within the ranks of Edo PDP that made the EPM the only visible opposition in Edo politics.
“Even now that the Edo PDP has elected a new Chairman and Exco, in what looked like a Church all-night service than a political congress, the direction of its new leadership appears to have been lost in greater depths of despondency.
“This is not far from the reason why governorship aspirants of PDP extraction, including their 2016 governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-lyamu, consider the APC as a better and more reliable political platform. As it stands, the PDP has no single elected government official at both the State and local government levels in Edo. Their approach to the Edo 2020 governorship election is more pentecostal than political.
“They are waiting for the former and latter rain of the Zamfara experience to fall upon them. That remains their only hope for survival in the Edo 2020 governorship race. So it is difficult to believe if the new leadership of Edo PDP is not a surrogate of the EPM, in the light of the contemporaneous nature of the opening of the EPM divisive secretariat in Benin City, not too far from the State Secretariat of the APC.
“An election season is not a time for despondency or to market intellectually obese ideas, but a period for action. The Godwin Obaseki-led APC Government of Edo State mis-poised ongoing into the Edo 2020 governorship race with an approach of tackling issues and not personalities.”
