Soldier and gunmen in a gun duel in Borno
Barely ten days when gunmen in a tricylce, Keke NAPEP suspected to Boko Haram sect killed a police officer around the City roundabout, off Abba Liman shopping complex in Biu Local Government Area of Borno state, another set of gunmen suspected to be armed robbers engaged in a gun duel with some security operatives which led to the killing of one of the security operatives, two gunmen and some innocent civilians which were caught up by a stray bullets, while several houses, shops and vehicles were also set ablaze.
Biu is about 185 kilometres away from Maiduguri, the state capital, which had witnessed series of attacks, bombings and killings by suspected Boko Haram sect in recent times.
Vanguard gathered that the robbers who were armed with sophisticated weapons had stormed a Cocoa Cola shop/deport at the Abba Liman Shopping Complex within the heart of the town and collected an unspecified amount of money, but in the process of escape, they had an encounter with some security operatives believed to be soldiers, and on realizing the presence of security operatives, the gunmen opened fire which sparked exchange of gun fire between them and the security operatives.
An eyewitness who pleaded anonimity told our Correspondent on phone that the gunmen succeeded in killing one of the soldiers during the gun duel, adding that two of the gunmen were also gun down, while innocent civilians were also killed by a stray bullets.
He said ” when I was running for safety, I saw the corpse of one the soldiers and other bodies suspected to be of the gunmen and civilians who were caught up in the duel, I also saw some houses and shops being consumed by flame.”
The JTF Spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa and the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Gideon Jubrin could not be reached as at the time of going to press.
