No fewer than nine persons died on Good Friday in an accident involving an Audi 80 car and a Toyota Hiace bus on the Ogoja-Calabar Highway in Cross River State. It was also gathered that 12 others were seriously injured in the accident.

The accident occurred barley a week after a trailer rammed into a stationary car along the same axis and killed five occupants of the car. Daily Sun gathered that six male and three female passengers died on the spot in the accident, which occurred at about 6:00pm at Esinjok village following a head-on-collision between the two vehicles. An eyewitness told Daily Sun that villagers of Esinjok, a few kilometers from Ogoja, where the bus, belonging to a transport company, was heading, had to use axes and machetes to bring out the bodies of the nine passengers.

The eyewitness said the accident was as a result of excessive speeding on the part of the Toyota bus driver who attempted to overtake a trailer, but could not as the trailer driver increased his speed. “As the bus driver attempt to overtake failed, he collided headlong with the on-coming Audi car which was on a high speed,” the eyewitness said. Speaking to Daily Sun on telephone, one of the villagers, who was at the scene of the incident, Mr. Emmanuel Bissong, confirmed that nine persons died in the crash. He said the trailer driver did not stop to find out what happened.

Bissong, 54, a teacher in the community, said those who sustained injury were rushed to Ogoja General Hospital, while the corpses of the dead were deposited in the hospital mortuary. Speaking to newsmen on series of accidents along the Ikom Ogoja Highway, the Ogoja Unit Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogoja, Mr. Kagho Odafe, said a good number of accidents that occurred on the road were as a result of excessive speeding and reckless driving. Odafe advised drivers and other road users to be very careful.
