Nigerians in Canada Protest Against Ill-treatment By The Embassy

By Omosede Obaseki

A demonstration broke out in front of the Nigerian High  commission on Thursday at 295  Metcalfe Street, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada few days ago.

According to an eyewtiness, the protest started because  the entire  staff of the  high commission, after giving appointments to people for consular services, travelled to Calgary in the Canadian Prairies (about five and half hours by flight from  Ottawa) without  arrangement to cater for them.

Some of protestants  who were given appointments, travelled about 800km from their destination to the embassy only to discover the embassy was  fully locked down with a note on the door saying the office would remain close for the rest of the week.

Out of frustration, they started demonstrating.

Effort made to reach Ojo Maduekwe,  Nigeria’s  High Commissioner to Canada, and the other officers of the high commission were unsuccessful.

It was reported that Ottawa police assisted in bringing control to the situation
