Many Edo Youths Are Not Ready To Engage – Senator Urhoghide Laments
Senator (Pharm.) Matthew A. Urhoghide (FPSN, FNAPharm.), Chairman, Senate Public Accounts Committee lamented that Edo youths are not willing to engage in opportunities created for them.
Senator (Pharm.) Matthew A. Urhoghide (FPSN, FNAPharm.), Chairman, Senate Public Accounts Committee lamented that Edo youths don’t engage in opportunities created for them.
Urhohide was responding to a query by NAIJA CENTER NEWS correspondent regarding the Libya returnees.
Senator Matthew Urhoghide has trained more than 5,000 men, youths and women in Edo South Senatorial District till date.
The Senator complained that many of the returnees and some unemployed youths in Edo State collected money after training only to spend it on cosmetics at New Benin market.
He lamented about how some youths sold the tricycles that cost him millions for a lower price.
“I bought a tricycle for the youths who are not employed to make a living, at least every week, they could raise close to N15,000, that will put money on their table and closed to 60,000 a month but many of them went to forest road to sell them for half the price.
“Many of them don’t’ want their pictures taken, they collect the money, their accounts were credited, but they received payment and don’t want their photos taken.
“These youths were all given money, training materials and no one can say this didn’t happen. The one I trained the other time in agro-business, I gave them 50,000 each over about 211 of them, it cost me about N10.5 million but how many of them really settled down to get it going?
“I tried to drag the government into it, and I say ‘ see, I have Libyan returnee, it is my district’ Now that they have done it, that’s the first phase. I got our youths to learn one or two things, some of them have started, but many of them, even though you give them N10bn to them, their fixation is not to start a business, they believe even N10bn is not enough for them. “
The Senator took a swipe at those who criticize every effort of the government to assist the youths. “I have given out scholarship to people, 200 scholarship awards out of my own people, they still call me to ask me, ‘is it true?’ You will give them the picture and all the details, they still doubt. Everybody wants to criticize. How many of them utilize the opportunity we create for them? Many of them took the money and went to New Benin market to buy cosmetic; some want to return to Libya, how many of them do the needful, to encourage the Senator, to say, let him do it again?”
Urhoghide disclosed to NAIJA CENTER NEWS that his next plan is to engage the cultists in Edo in order to stop the daily news of cult rivalry and war in the state.
