Journalist Accuses NCDC, FG Of Covering Up Covid-19 Death In Kwara State
An investigative journalist ‘Fisayo Soyombo has accused the Federal government of Nigeria, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control of a cover-up of a Coronavirus-related death in Ilorin, the capital city of Kwara State.
According to Soyombo, the “powers that be did not everything to cover it up and NCDC won’t add it to the death count.
The patient whose identity is not made public but influential reportedly returned from the United Kingdom and was initially self-isolated in Lagos before an unnamed professor-of-medicine-friend invited him to Ilorin, where he privately received treatment.
The journalist added “On Day 13, his condition worsened. so he was taken to UITH. He was to be moved to the isolation ward but there was an “order from above” for him to remain at the Accident and Emergency unit.”
Soyombo alleged that information of the deceased travel history and his previous isolation were hidden from the doctors and hospital in general at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH).
He said “Until he started showing severe COVID-19 symptoms, the docs who attended to him didn’t know it was the virus; this was a patient of their bosses. He died shortly after.
“Meanwhile, he’d had contact with docs, nurses and other patients.
“After his death, they ensured the body wasn’t tested for the virus. The deceased was buried on Fri without scientific confirmation of COVID-19, but two hospital staff have been giving me details of events that led to his death.
“The bigwigs at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) knew. The state govt did, too. A grand cover-up.”
Meanwhile, the journalist said the government has rejected the death as a COVID-19 case but claimed the death was due to “respiratory illness”.
The hospital also in an attempt to cover up the true cause of death says it was from “food poisoning”
Meanwhile, Soyombo said the hospital refused to allow the ambulance that evacuated the corpse back to the hospital premises.
“Docs, nurses & pharmacists who potentially had contact with him are now on chloroquine prophylaxis; isolation.” He added.
“The Medical Emergency has been shut down; fumigation initiated
“Two professors of medicine — the one who housed the diseased; the one who pulled the strings to halt his transfer to the isolation ward — betrayed their colleagues.
“This potential COVID spread in UITH was preventable.
“May ‘man know the man’ not kill us in this country!”
