The Oyo State government has educated parents on the importance of making sure their wards receives measles vaccine, sending a warning note that failure to do so can cause blindness, deafness and even death in children that are not immunized.
The Acting Secretary, State Primary Health Care Board, Dr Lanre Abass speaking at a media conference preceding the 2018 free measles vaccination in the state through a Health Educator, Mr Olaoye Olarinde said measles can only be prevented through vaccination.
Dr Abass, further said children that are not vaccinated are most at risk of being infected by this killer disease.
He said, “when a child has measles, its complications are unlimited. When the eye is affected, it can lead to blindness. The infection of the eardrum can result to deafness.”
The free measles vaccination exercise is scheduled for 8th of March till 20th of March, 2018 at all primary health care centres and other designated places, and it was to ensure that no child between nine months and 58 months of age. are protected against the disease.
While debunking a rumour that vaccinations are not safe for children, Dr Abass said children that receive the immunization are also protected from other diseases such as tuberculosis, diphtheria, yellow fever, polio, and hepatitis.
The free vaccination exercise will take place in two phases, and this is part of efforts by the State government in making sure that Nigeria can be free of measles come the year 2020.
