Hostages may still be alive – Niigerian Minister

Gunmen opened fire at Dan Maliki Primary School in the northern Nigerian city of Kano on Tuesday, injuring four teachers before fleeing on a stolen motorcycle, police said.

The school was immediately shut.

There were indications that theft was the motive for the attack at Hausa Quarters, Kumbotso Local Government Area, but Islamist group Boko Haram has razed several schools in the region as part of an insurgency that has killed hundreds since 2009.

Just before classes were due to begin, two armed men stormed a state-run primary school in the Danmaliki suburb of Kano, the largest city in mainly Muslim northern Nigeria.

“The gunmen shot and injured four teachers including the headmaster and fled but we have opened an investigation into the attack and have deployed policemen…for a manhunt,” Kano state Police Commissioner Musa Daura said.

The assailants forced several people to lie face down on the ground, robbing mobile phones and cash before they started shooting, the police chief said.

The gunmen fled on a motorbike that belonged to one of the victims.

Daura declined to comment on the suspected motive for the shooting.

The Police claimed a number of arrests have been made over the attack on Dan Maliki Primary school in

Four people who got bullet wounds during the attack, including the Headmaster are responding to treatment at a government hospital within the city.

Kumbotso which habours industrial quarters in Kano has been recording deadly attacks lately.

About two weeks ago, gunmen suspected to be Islamic militants raided a compound inhabited by Christians and killed the men in cold blood.

“We urge residents to move about their businesses and report any suspicious movement through the lines we have made public. As you are aware, no life was lost during the attack; and those affected are in stable condition,” Majia told P.M.NEWS on phone.
