Edo Coronavirus Management: Seplat to the Rescue, Donates Over 3500 Relief Items

As Nigeria enters a critical week to curtail the spread of the Coronavirus Pandemic and the scaled-up numbers of infected persons nationwide, Seplat in its Corporate Social Responsibility is charged up to Rescue the society from the prevailing Scourge.

The growing trends of the pandemic disease has given millions of Countrymen course to worry about what the future holds.

With such Pressure frequently Mounting, President Muhammadu Buhari in a Nationwide broadcast, of Sunday, March 29, 2020, ordered a lockdown of the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos and Ogun state to check the spread of COVID-19.

The three Cities were seen as major threats in the widespread of the disease.

Prior to Sunday evening, when President Buhari gave the order in a life broadcast, there were series of agitations and condemnations that the government was handling the issue of coronavirus in the country with levity, while the president was vilified for failure to address Nigerians unlike other world leaders, who addressed their citizens on a daily basis over the development.

According to him, the lockdown, which began at 11 pm on Monday, would be for an initial period of 14 days.

He said during the lockdown residents of the FCT, Lagos and Ogun states should stay at home.

However, in Edo State, a similar order was given but at partial lock down.

The order afforded, however, citizens, the opportunity to conceptualize efforts to halt the spread of the disease.

As individuals, we remain the greatest weapon to fight this pandemic, by washing our hands regularly with clean water and soap, disinfecting frequently used surfaces and areas, coughing into a tissue or elbow and strictly adhering to infection prevention control measures in health facilities, we can contain this virus.

Apart from these very relevant precautionary measures, Health workers form an integral part of the process and have continued to demand proper kitties to enable them to confront and manage the deadly disease.

And Going by the words of the Nigeria Government, with the entire country in quarantine for more than a week and likely to continue for two more and probability that the government may extend the measure is at the mercy of the Pandemic destroying disease.

The rhythm of giving back to the society is perceived to have informed Seplat Petroleum Development Company to Donate some items for the Management of COVID-19 pandemic disease in Edo State.

Spokesman and Base Manager for the collaborating group, Engr  Emmanuel Otokhine who was at Government House, Benin City, said inline with it social corporate responsibilities, and Global support,
they decided to give support through the delivery of the Items.

Otokhine pointed out that, the need to play its parts in the enhancement of health care workers safety, informed the decision to support the Edo State Government.

“We are here to provide support to the state government as well as help, up its ability to manage the global COVID-19 disease. We have a number of items to present and that also would aid part of prevention controls”.

“We are aware the state government has put in various measures which inform our part to expand the measures by the State. And so we felt we should give the needed support,” he stated.

Seplat in its Social Corporate Responsibility have before now embarked on Nationwide aide, vowed to continue to play a vital role to manage the Situation.

Adding, he maintained that pivotal aim of the group is to ensure the value trickles down to the lower run of the Ladder.

While making the donations, Otokhine noted that the company has put together a hundred of Personal Protective Equipment, (PPE),  Five Chemical Glove Boxes, Twenty Temperature Guns, Hundred eye Goggles, Four Liters of Three Thousand hand Sanitizers, Twenty Motorized Sprayers, Five Boxes of Nose Masks,  hundred Knapsack Sprayers Amongst other items

Receiving the donated items, Governor Godwin Obaseki who was represented by his Deputy, Rt Hon Comrade Philip Shaibu, thanked the donors for their support.

He urged others, who have not yet made their contributions to borrow a leaf from the donors.

The governor explained that, with the level of Collaborations, it will help encourage health workers to keep tides with the ugly Novel Pandemic Scourge ravaging the society.

However, Nigeria, unfortunately, confirmed its first case on 27th February 2020. Since then, we have seen the number of confirmed cases rise slowly.

By the morning of March 29th, 2020, the total confirmed cases within Nigeria had risen and generated more at geometric spreads.

Regrettably, we also had our first fatality, a former employee of PPMC, who died on 23rd March 2020 and also followed by another recorded fatality or death afterwards.

As of today, COVID-19 has no cure despite Scientists around the world working very hard to develop a vaccine.

Since the outbreak was reported in China, the Government said, it has been monitoring the situation closely and studying the various responses adopted by other countries.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, had confirmed  new cases of coronavirus disease in the country as the total number of confirmed cases hit 139.

While the number of cases nationwide continue to increase  respectively, millions of residents are abiding by a quarantine that carries harsh penalties for those running errands on the street that are not exempted

A breakdown of this figure shows that, Lagos which has become an epicentre of this disease lead the lines and closely followed by Abuja and Oyo State.

Edo State has thus recorded over two cases with others facing a possible contraction of the disease.

Nine have been discharged with two deaths recorded thus far.

Unlike Nigeria, the virus has claimed the lives of many in another part of the world with Italy, Spain, France, UK, China, USA the worst-hit Nations.

Different postulations are available to arrest the ravaging virus such as self-isolation, washing of hands, wearing of facemask, using sanitizers and practising basic principles of self-hygiene.

Indeed these methods are helpful if implemented with total dedication and utmost concerns by those saddled with the responsibilities.

By and Large, Government can’t do this alone without the support of non-governmental individuals, philanthropists, Corporate entities to help ameliorate the sufferings of the people for the period.
