Commercial Bus Operators Protest Government Directives on Seating Guidelines in Edo
Commercial vehicle operators in Benin Metropolis are protesting against the state government over their plights to comply with government directives on seating guidelines.
The drivers who had gathered in large numbers at the popular New Benin market to protest the hardship claimed they were amazed despite the drastic actions by other states to ease the sufferings of their people, the Edo government was still keen on making its residents suffer unbearable pain
They claimed that Government resolves to give the Directives on the seating guidelines per person, negates issuance of daily revenue tickets which has reduced their incomes thereby, placing a further burden on them amidst the ravaging Novel Coronavirus pandemic.
Some of the drivers who spoke to NAIJA CENTRE NEWS, said they were ready to comply with state government’s directives on seating guidelines, which stipulates that they are not to covey more than four people in a car or more than seven in a bus.
The Protesters, however, demanded suspension in the issuance of revenue tickets as part of Government efforts and sacrifices made in this trying moment to cushion the adverse effects expected within the period, side by side, with the new directives.
The drivers said, “as it is now, we are demanding the suspension of daily tickets, which has placed more burden on us, the government is not helping this coronavirus matter, they are not giving us money or foodstuffs, but they still come to make things worse for us”.
Recall that, the State Government gave the Directives to reduce the spread of the disease in the state
However, responding to the protester’s demand, the Chairman Edo State Chapter, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, RTEAN, Pastor Sunday Erhahon, said, those engaged in the unwholesome protest, are enemies who are hell-bent on putting a clog in the wheels of progress
Erhahon said, “Few percentages of the drivers in Collaborations with area boys are in it. Few of them who put up the unwholesome protest is devoid of the truth but we have put up the machinery to hurt their advancement. What the state government has done is for their good and interest”
It took some will power and the timely interventions of Edo Civil Society Organizations, EDOCSO and Public Safety and Works Volunteers (PUWOV) Scheme, PUWOV, to control the Heightened protest from escalating.
