20-yr-old man remanded over attempt to use his mother for ritual
AKURE — AN Akure Mag-istrate Court has ordered that a 20-year-old labourer, Gbenga Adeniyi, who allegedly attempted using his mother for ritual be remanded in Olokuta Prison.
Gbenga is to be in the prison custody till June 10 this year pending the issuance of medical report on the state of his mother’s health.
This was the ruling of an Akure Magistrate’s Court, yesterday, when the case came up for mention.
The accused person was first arraigned on May 9, 2013 on a two-count charge of attempted murder.
Police Prosecutor, ASP Isah Atanegbe told the court that the incident took place at about 3 a.m at Abiribiri Street, Isolo, Akure.
Atanegbe also said the accused used a big stone to hit his mum, Mrs Doja Saka, on the forehead after which she lost consciousness and thereafter used scissors to inflict injuries on her eyes, shaved her head and burnt them same night for diabolical means.
While the accused pleaded guilty to the first count charge of using scissors and stone to inflict severe injuries on the eyes and head of her mother, he, however, pleaded not guilty to the second count charge of causing grievous harm on her.
When the case came up for mention, yesterday, ASP Atanegbe informed the court that the victim was still in critical condition at the State Specialist Hospital, Akure.
It was gathered that Gbenga is the last child of the victim’s first husband.
Atanegbe said that the victim’s critical condition led to the inability of the doctor to issue medical report and asked for adjournment pending when the document is available.
Chief Magistrate Akintoye then ordered that the accused be remanded in prison pending the issuance of the report and adjourned the case till June 10, 2013.
