Oshiomhole’s Survival and Alleged Well Wishers

The crisis shaking the ruling party in Nigeria has kept on bewitching the expectation and fate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

While the party is confronting innumerable criticism from Nigerians over its unique style of ruling the nation, the party itself is partitioned as insatiability, personal aspirations, power and desperation are sinking the party.

Under the administration of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun who became the Chairman of the party in June 2014, and was replaced in 2017 after some powerful elements in the party including the Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, individuals blamed him for unfairness.

As indicated by Ganduje, they pushed for a change in the national leadership of the APC due to the unpleasant experience they had under Odigie-Oyegun.

“During the previous administration, we were marginalised and our opponents within the party were used officially against us. That was very painful,” he said.

“We decided to effect a change and luckily, Mr President, who is the national leader of the party, gave his consent to what we wanted to do.

“We are now benefitting from the change in the leadership of the party and we are witnessing full participation of stakeholders in the scheme of things.”

The party designated Oshiomhole as a substitution, in the conviction that his administration will be all-inclusive.

In spite of the fact that there were murmurs, Oshiomhole’s travail exacerbated in 2019 when he permitted a few states to pick their method of primaries, while simultaneously purportedly foisting an alternate technique on others. This choice won him some incredible foes.

The handling of the primaries which prompted the development of governorship and National Assembly contender for the 2019 general political decision is the dark hole that is as yet expending the National Chairman.

Oshiomhole is moreover also combating with the individuals who are strategizing ahead of the 2023 general election.

His relationship with some members of the party’s National Working Committee, particularly those from the North, got ugly as he merged force on the supposition of office.

All the more significantly, the National Chairman combat with his former political son, the executive governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki whom he had given everything to make a governor in 2016.

Although Oshiomhole boasted about Obaseki as the most qualified in the 2016 campaign trail, he additionally swore not to meddle in his administration, especially, as he went through eight years of his administration placing alleged godfathers in their places.

During a recent interview with NAIJA CENTER NEWS, a former Aide to the former Edo State Governor, Prince Kassim Afegbua said Obaseki’s contention with his former boss was Oshiomhole’s refusal to back off.

Afegbua had told the journalist that the bad blood mainly started in 2019.

The issues were very flimsy. It was all about the primary election of the party before the 2019 elections.

“Oshiomhole believed that there was a need to work together harmoniously to deliver the state while the Governor felt the National Chairman had no business prying into the business of politics of the state.

“But of course, the former Governor is the chairman of the ruling party. In the process, the governor organised his primary election which the national office cancelled and set up a panel to organise a fresh one.

“By this time, tempers were already high and the aftermath effect was the dismal performance of the APC at the presidential election. Comrade Adams Oshiomhole also wanted the Governor to accommodate those who worked assiduously for the election of Governor Obasek”

A previous Chairman of the party, John Odigie-Oyegun accused Oshiomhole of the crisis shaking the party.

Oyegun said Oshiomhole comes up short on the capacity to deal with the issues of the party and ought not to accuse anybody however himself.

“Oshiomhole fails because he lacks the temperament that is required to run a political party. He lacks the capacity to manage the different interests and tendencies that constitute a political party,” Oyegun said in the statement signed by his media aide, Ray Morphy.

The former Chairman listed areas where Oshiomhole has a problem.

Oyegun said: “He (Oshiomhole) engages his mouth before engaging his mind, so he offends party members; so, how does that constitute booby.

“Already, the Deputy National Chairman, North, has confirmed that Oshiomhole runs the party without recourse to the NWC. He acts in direct opposite of decisions taken by NWC. No minutes of NWC meetings which in any event take place outside the party Secretariat.”

“How would you not have a crisis in states with the confusion that Oshiomhole created when he gave the state’s freedom to choose their methods of choosing candidates for elections.

“Much of the crisis in states arose out of sheer incapacity on the part of the current chairman

“Only a bad carpenter quarrels with his tools. Indeed, Oshiomhole is degrading and demarketing the party. Rather than seek to bring more people on board, he is rather chasing people out of the party with his Agbero style of engagement.”

With respect to Obaseki, he understood his fate was sealed when members from the Edo Peoples Movement (EPM), a gathering of aggrieved individuals who argued Obaseki had sidelined and dismissed them, called a Press conference.

During the conference, they affirmed that the governor won’t be given a subsequent ticket. Others focused on that he will get the Ambode treatment (explaining how the National Leader, Bola Tinubu shrunk the hope of a former governor of Lagos State Akinwunmi Ambode).

In a demonstration of intensity, Obaseki coordinated the suspension of his former boss until he apologises.

The state governor is accusing Oshiomhole, much the same as in numerous APC states, for the crisis shaking the party.

Without a power base to draw on, Oshiomhole was left exposed which gave rise to his suspension at an Abuja Federal High Court on March 4.

The request given by Justice Danlami Senchi saw Oshiomhole tossed out of his secretariat and denied acknowledgement as the party Chairman. The use of interlocutory order was filed by one Mustapha Salihu through his legal counsellor Mr Oluwole Afolabi.

They had in addition to other things, asked the court to remove Oshiomhole from office, asserting that he was recently suspended as a member from the party from his Etsako ward 10, in Edo State.

Though Oshiomhole was referred to as the First Respondent in the issue, the APC was sued as the second Respondent.

In the application dated January 16, the offended parties, advised the court that Oshiomhole neglected to challenge his suspension in his essential Ward in Edo state.

Oshiomhole, almost left in the wilderness by his opposition, is fighting back through his powerful allies, perhaps, hope that the President will compensate him for the good work he believes he is doing.

On March 6, Oshiomhole said he was unable to peruse President Muhammadu Buhari’s perception about him. He made light of the likelihood that Mr President probably won’t be happy with his authority.

When journalists questioned whether the President was happy with his style of leadership, Oshiomhole said “Now, you want me to read him, I will decline. If you are in doubt, you are so privileged here that you can ask the president: comfortable or uncomfortable,” he said.

“I am not a comfort reader, what I have done I have explained to you, that much I know is the truth. As for questions that have to do with inner feelings, those you can confirm if you are in doubt.”

Many party pioneers consider Oshiomhole’s leadership style as a stick in the mud, other accepts his unequivocal quality is to reduce their essence. In spite of, Oshiomhole has contended that his legacy means a great deal while recognizing that as a human, he may have committed a few errors.

“You see in whatever you do, those who want to fight you will fight you. But I know that my tenure will be defined my God, not by man. And I worry more about what I will be remembered for when I was chairman rather than how long I was chairman,” he said.

“I am convinced that I have done my very best, mistakes would have been made and I want to see the one person who will say he has never made mistakes. But if there are mistakes of the head, we have the capacity to correct mistakes of the head. But I know I have not set out to make the mistakes of the heart.

“It is just that by the reason of the position that I occupy, it is not quite appropriate for me to join at this hour in explaining who is responsible for the losses that people point out and they want to heap on my head.” He said.

Meanwhile, the assistant national secretary of the party, Victor Gaidom said Oshiomhole remained suspended. He had circulated a notice announcing NEC meeting on a Tuesday, March 17 2020.

Expectedly, in a statement jointly signed by the party spokesman, Lanre Issa-Onilu and the national legal adviser Babatunde Ogala and one Mr Bulama, the party argued that Gaidom lacks the legal backing to call the NEC meeting.

Oshiomhole is in the situation of capacity to bless anybody for a position. Because of this, he can’t separate genuine love from a phoney. There are simply numerous governorship aspirants praising him enthusiastically to get seen or get remunerated.

Oshiomhole will know his genuine companions when he never again has the force as a kingmaker. The APC beset Chairman has remained his most exceedingly awful foe as he encircles himself with favour searchers.

If the greater part of the initiative of the party needs him gone, the beset Chairman may reconsider his system and treatment of his individuals as his removal possibly the start of his transgress to grass.

Oshiomhole’s survival does not depend on his favour seekers disguising as well-wishers. He and only himself will untangle what he has meddled.

What would his suspension mean to Godwin Obaseki’s second ambition?
