The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has given a nod for some members who returned to the party recently to contest its presidential ticket ahead of the 2019 general elections.
The party has eyes for Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State, a former governor of Kano State, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Senate President Bukola Saraki
PDP made the ticket opened for other returnees who have the intentions to run for 2019 presidential election.
Tambuwal and Saraki were among those who dumped the All Progressive Congress for the main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
At the 81st National Executive Committee (NEC) of the PDP yesterday in Abuja, the party National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus told the returnees that they have equal rights with the existing members.
He said “Three more governors and some ministers are coming to our fold, they (APC government) are not aware. Security and economy have collapsed, they are not aware. There are killings in different parts of the country, they are not aware. Until we reclaim power in 2019, they won’t be aware of anything.”
Who will PDP likely to support?
Though the PDP has made the ticket open for all its aspirants, the party leadership is likely to support the present governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal who was one of the returnees a few days ago.
Some of the leadership of the PDP who spoke with NAIJA CENTER NEWS in anonymity said the party is likely to back Tambuwal in order to triumph over the gimmicks the Presidency and the President, Muhammadu Buhari is likely to come up with during the hot period of the campaign.
The PDP is expecting more intimidation from the President who had so far used the security agencies like the Police, the Economics and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, the Department of Secret Service (DSS) and others to intimidate its members in disguise of anti-corruption war.
To withstand the storm, the PDP members have secretly analyzed the best candidate to defeat the President.
Why Aminu Tambuwal?
The Sokoto governor who was one time the Speaker of the House of Representatives is by far the only aspirant that doesn’t have any blemish in terms of corruption cases, he is a young man, a 52 years old, he has immunity because of the desperation on the part of the APC government, “they may want to arrest candidates for trump up charges and allegations in order to paint to the people that PDP is still full of corrupt people with dent image.
“But for Tambuwal, he has been a speaker for years, has been a governor and there are no cases of corruption around him, he is very articulate and a lawyer. To a large extent, he connects with people a lot
“He is also a supporter of the restructuring of the country because Nigeria cannot continue to rely on an old system and expect a different result. As a young man with a lot of energy, he has the ability to network the country, build alliances, build friendship, engage in dialogue and with a view to taking decisions that would asway Nigerians with different shapes of options”, the source says.
Atiku was a former Vice President of Nigeria, so he has experience in the Presidency, extremely rich and a business tycoon who has provided thousands of employment to Nigerians through his numerous conglomerates. However, he is as old as the current President and likely to be as sickly as Buhari due to his age. He has issues of corruption tag of stigma on him which will give the incumbent government a chance to run a campaign that will target his numerous corruption allegations.
The former governor of Kano State is another experienced politician but has a case with the EFCC. He is being probed for the N10bn misappropriation of local government fund in Kano and if he is given a ticket, the Buhari’s presidency is likely to arrest him to prove to Nigerians that his government is still fighting corruption despite that Mr. Integrity as he is fondly called cannot fight massive corruption in his own political party.
The Senate President would have been a formidable candidate against Buhari due to his popularity, however, like Atiku and Kwankwaso, he had been dragged to court on several corruption charges, plus the PDP is targetting proper north to compete with Buhari as Kwara State where the Senate President hail from is closer to the South-West, the Oduduwa Origin.
What Could Buhari be depending on?
Despite the hurricane defection that took place in APC a few days ago, the President insists that he is not moved.
Buhari disclosed this on Sunday night in Lome Togo while responding to a question during an interactive session with Nigerian community at the Nigerian Embassy.
“That is an outright lie. Buhari cannot lose strong members of his party and still say he is not moved except he has any intention of writing the result during the election” says the Spokesman of the Reformed All Progressives Congress (RAPC) Prince Kassim Afegbua.
R-APC broke from the primary body, the All Progressives Congress and is headed by one of the President’s former strong ally Alhaji Buba Galadinma.
Buhari does not want to be seen as weak or worried about the defection, he is perhaps, losing sleep on the turn of event. Those who had left the party are three governors, 14 Senators including the Senate President, the spokesman of the party, and their thousands of followers.
To cover up his insecurity, the President boasted that he had done well in the aspect of insecurity. The statement may offend the sensibility of the people. Zamfara State is currently under arm bandits, they have occupied three local government and just a few days ago the President gave a matching order to send 1000 soldiers to help fight the gunmen.
These bandits or herdsmen kill, kidnapping every day on the highways, and farmers in the South-south, South East and South-West are scared to return to their farms as herdsmen rape, maim and murder them with security agencies looking helpless and waiting for an order that may never come from the federal level.
The 2019 election will be a battle between David and Goliath, or a nation’s war that could either make or break the country. Just as Buhari is planning tactics to weaken the energizing opposition, the same opposition will run a campaign that tells Nigerians what they already know, that is, the failure of the current administration.
When the campaign starts, the PDP is going to show the statistics of the people who have been killed by herdsmen. Nigeria is now a country of mourners and condolences writers because of the numbers of condolences send to sympathize with the people who have lost their loved ones to the herdsmen.
Last two weeks, 600 soldiers were overpowered and taken into captivity and up till now, there is no confirmed information from the government.
The style of fighting corruption in Nigeria is probably the worst in the history. Most of the war is fought on social media while those accused of diverting public fund walk free. Besides, the President fights those he perceived as enemies, particularly the members of the opposition while members of his cabinet who have been indicted in many corruption allegations are ignored. The recent among them is the revelation that Buhari’s Finance Minister Mrs. Kemi Adesosun forged her NYSC exemption certificate. The President is yet to release a statement regarding the allegation while the Finance Minister remained mum too.
Every country is corrupt but the country must build the institution to fight corruption. Corruption cannot be fought by applying selective methods and leaving the real issues unattended to. The President gets an automatic erection the moment the allegations involved his political opponent meanwhile Buhari’s front role friends are corrupt or have been indicted.
Buhari’s achievement is below average. Buhari is sickly and he is not on top of situations. There are so many governments within government, so many people who are presiding over Nigeria patrimony, giving directives in the name of the President and because the President refused to make himself available to the public, well, until recently, they get away with it.
Buhari is not too strong to read missives and before writing to the President, one is advised specifically not to let it be more than 5 pages because he doesn’t have the luxury to read them. The President closes at 5 to 6 o’clock because his doctor told him to sleep and eat more.
Nigerians are currently yawning for a man who is awake when the country is sleeping. The people also yawn for a leader who can connect, understand their problems, tweet, Facebook and understand the diversity of the economy, unify the country because it’s heavily polarized along tribal and religious lines because Nigeria is a multi-ethnic configuration as it cannot fan the ember of division on the basis of ethnicity, Christian-Muslim dichotomy.
Other Issues Nigerians Have with Buhari.
Buhari doesn’t speak, he doesn’t interact with the people, he doesn’t interrogate issues, and he doesn’t engage with them. The President remained mute over the incident that took place in Ekiti State until his name was dragged in. In Benue State, 8 lawmakers tried to impeach the governor, he kept mute. He released a comment to deny involvement and that is contrary to the preaching that he is an anti-corruption agent.
Rule of law is zero. The President refused to release some persons who were granted bail by the justice system. The incumbent government must define its leadership compass for people to use the President’s body language to access history. So far, there is more corruption in this government than the previous government that gave rise to Buhari’s presidency.
A former member of the APC now in PDP who didn’t want to be named because of the intimidations told NAIJA CENTER NEWS that “It is very disturbing, there are things you expect him to take a decision on at the snap of his finger but he doesn’t. Look at the Ministers including the ones that are not performing are still there as if they were all elected like him to serve four years tenure.
“There is so much of dictatorship, too much of arrogance. They are using the Police as it has now become an agent of the Presidency. When they write a speech for the President, they will write very elegant speeches and at the end, you realize these speeches don’t represent the reality on the ground.”
It is obvious that Buhari, a one time saint to the masses has hurt the feelings of those who once trusted him. His refusal to repent create fear in the heart of many Nigerians who describe his administration as “hell on earth” and the thought of allowing him another four years is unimaginable.
Will the President win the 2019 election fair and square or will he apply every machinery at his disposal to check-mate those he described yesterday as “bad eggs” that needed to be fished out? Will Nigerians vote count or the outcome will solely be determined by the body responsible for election?
